Our February Casenote How competition affects broadband speed summarises the results of new research by Case economists on the impact that competition and access has on broadband penetration rates and up/download speeds. Using data for the EU27 and a specially constructed index of Internet up/download speeds Case used econometric analysis to estimate the separate effects of direct network, facilities, and service based competiton on broadband pentration rates and speeds. The results suggest that both direct network and facilities based competition increase both broadband pentration rates and speeds across Europe, whereas service based competition does not.
